CO2 scarcity in UK may 'cancel Christmas', huge fowl provider cautions

(MENAFN) The head of the UK's largest fowl provider stated, a scarcity of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas implies Christmas parties could be called off.

A sharp increase in gas costs has caused two huge fertiliser factories in Teesside and Cheshire which produce CO2 as a secondary product to close, affecting supply to the food production.

Ranjit Singh Boparan, the head of Bernard Matthews and 2 Sisters Food Group, reported supply difficulties, as well as a scarcity of staff, will impact the production of turkeys for Christmas.

Industry officials have reported, CO2 is employed in the humane killing of farm animals and to expand the expiration date of products. It is also fundamental to cooling systems for refrigeration needs.
