Shura Council election campaigns heat up

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Despite the focus of the Shura Council's election campaign on social media and mainstream media, many streets and main roads began to be adorned with pictures of candidates and their electoral programmes.

The billboards include the candidates' pictures, names, and district numbers, aiming to convince voters and introduce them to their election programme.

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) issued regulations for obtaining a permit for advertisements. To obtain an advertising permit for election campaigns, the candidate should submit required documents such as a copy of the candidate's nomination paper issued by the Election Committee and an ID copy.

The advertisement design shall not (in terms of size, shape, and colours) be similar to traffic signs, banners, or other official signs. The advertising boards shall not hinder traffic flow, cause problems for pedestrians, or hide or disable traffic signals' functions.

Some candidates do not consider these billboards and advertisements good enough to explain the contents of the electoral programmes, as they are only to draw attention.

“We started the campaign on Wednesday, and the focus is more on social media and other media outlets such as television and newspapers,” said Al Maha Jassim Al Majed, candidate of Constituency No 11.“I think that media outlets, especially social media are better for explaining the content of electoral programs than the billboards and banners which are fixed in the streets,” she said.

Talking to The Peninsula, Al Majed explained:  “social media platforms are easier for both candidates and voters and can reach more followers.”

There are 284 candidates, including 28 women, vying for 30 seats from as many constituencies.

Only one candidate was registered for Constituency No. 5 in the final list, becoming the first candidate to secure his seat in the upcoming Shura Council.

Fourteen venues, comprising nine club halls and five youth centres have been provided to candidates to hold their campaign events free of charge. A candidate also has the right to hold a meeting in a hotel at his expense and after notifying the Supervisory Committee.

The campaigns will end 24 hours before the start of the polling process.
