Italy’s FM emphasizes ‘urgent need for real EU defense’

(MENAFN) On Friday, Sep. 17 Italy’s foreign minister stated that the US pullout from Afghanistan and the AUKUS deal for the supply of nuke submarines to Australia "demonstrate the urgency of launching a real EU defense."

Luigi Di Maio said to La Repubblica in an interview: "it would be a very important and necessary step ... none of us can think of competing as a single country."

He anticipated that the 27-member bloc would reach an agreement on the matter, which might have foreign policy suggestions.

The minister noted: “the debate has just resumed, but we have encouraging signs ... we want to be able to take decisions by majority vote ... This is a historic and urgent turning point."
