Nine police officers, 10 soldiers in DR Congo convicted of rape


(MENAFN) According to local media, nine police officers and 10 soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were sentenced of rape and given jail sentences.

Daily La PrunelleRDC reported that a military court passed on prison terms averaging from 12 months to 20 years and ordered the criminals to pay damages of amid USD2,000 to USD10,000 to the survivors, who were mostly minors.

The offenses were carried out in different areas of DR Congo’s South Kivu province, including Walungu, Kabare, Uvira, and Fizi.

Lawyers for the survivors welcomed the ruling, but the convicts aim to challenge the verdicts.
