Iraqi forces conduct anti-IS drive close to Iraqi-Syrian frontier

(MENAFN) A provincial security source stated that on Tuesday, Aug. 31 Iraq conducted a drive to capture the rebels of the extremist Islamic State (IS) outfit close to the Iraqi-Syrian frontier in the Iraqi western province of Anbar.

Colonel Salih Ibrahim from Anbar's police said to Xinhua that Iraqi security forces, supported by aircraft, pushed into the desert area in three passages to clean up the frontier areas of the IS militants, who repeatedly conduct assaults on the Iraqi security forces.

The IS rebels are still operating in the huge Anbar desert that extends to the frontiers with bordering nations of Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. They are breaking into Iraq from adjacent Syria across the almost 600-km frontier with Iraq, in an effort to regroup again.

The security condition in Iraq has been getting better since Iraqi security forces beat the IS fighters in 2017. Nevertheless, IS remnants have since melted into urban regions or deserts and rugged areas, conducting frequent guerilla assaults against security forces and citizens.
