NEW YORK, Aug 30 (KUNA) -- The UN Security Council (UNSC) on Monday adopted unanimously the resolution 2591 extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, (UNIFIL) for another year.
"The UN Security Council just voted unanimously to renew the mandate of UNIFIL in Lebanon after difficult negotiations," Lebanon's envoy to the United Nations Amal Mudallali wrote on her Twitter account.
The new resolution reiterates UNIFIL's mandate, as set out in Resolution 1701 (2006) and confirmed in subsequent resolutions.
Under the UNSCR 2591, the Security Council requested UNIFIL to take "temporary and special measures" to support the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) with non-lethal material (such as food, fuel, and medicine) and logistical support for a period of six months, according to the UNIFIL's website.
This would be done within existing resources, and in compliance with the UN Human Rights Due Diligence Policy. The Council also strongly urged further and increased international support for the LAF, while reiterating the necessity of an effective and durable LAF deployment in south Lebanon, it added.
The Council further appealed to the parties to make constructive and expanded use of UNIFIL's Tripartite mechanisms, including the sub-committee on the marking of the Blue Line.
In addition, it urged the parties to stick to their obligation so as to respect the safety of UNIFIL and other UN personnel.
The Council called on the parties to take all appropriate measures to boost the safety and security of UN personnel and equipment.
Moreover, it called for rapidly finalizing investigations launched by Lebanon into all attacks committed against UNIFIL so as to swiftly bring to justice the perpetrators of these attacks.
The Council appealed to the parties to strengthen their efforts to fully implement all provisions of Resolution 1701 (2006) without delay.
It deplored all violations of the Blue Line by air and ground, and strongly called on the parties to respect the cessation of hostilities, prevent Blue Line violations, and cooperate fully with the UN and UNIFIL.
It finally called on the parties to ensure the freedom of movement of UNIFIL and reach the Blue Line. (end)
