São Paulo – This year's Arab World Film Festival will take place online again. The movies will be screened on the Festival and SESC's digital platforms, and the seven titles were never before released in Brazil. The event is free, and the films display themes such as the political future and societies in transformation in a post-pandemic world. The screenings will run from August 20 to September 16, 2021. Pictured above, the film“200 Meters.”
The event is organized by Brazil's Arab Culture Institute (ICArabe) and the Brazilian Social Service for Commerce (SESC) of the state of São Paulo. Arab House, the cultural center of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), is a sponsor of the Festival. In addition to the screenings, online meetings with directors and special guests will be hosted for interaction with the public.
The works include directors and producers from countries like Syria, Palestine, Qatar, and Brazil. In the production of“In Memoriam,” Brazil, Argentina, and Syria are involved. The film is directed by Brazilian Otavio Cury. The first part of the schedule is split between exclusive screenings on the Festival's website from August 20 to September 2. Other films will be screened on SESC's digital platform from August 20 to September 16.

The works can also be divided into two main themes:“Mental Plots,” which includes the documentary“Chaos,” by director Sarah Fattahi; the feature“Screwdriver,” by director Bassam Jarbawi; and“The Scarecrows,” directed by Nouri Bouzid. The other session is called“Identity Kaleidoscope,” which encompasses“We are from there,” a documentary by Wissam Tanios; the fictional“Baghdad in My Shadow,” directed by Samir Jamal Aldin; the film“200 Meters,” directed by Ameen Nayfeh; in addition to“In Memoriam.”
The event bolsters the diversity of the Arab countries and ties with Brazilian society.“In the wake of the search for works of contemporary cinematography in the Arab World, the identity of people and the ideal of a nation that one intends to forge are put into question, under the critical perspective of its directors who emerge in the eagerness to denounce regional and universal themes,” stated in a note the Festival's curator, Arthur Jafet.
The opening will occur on August 19, at 7:00 pm BRT (10:00 pm UTC), online (on ICArabe's YouTube channel ). After the event, each platform will make available one film per week. To watch those on the Festival's website, registration is required. To watch the movies on SESC's platform, registration is not needed.
The event also has the support of Arteplex, UNIFESP (Federal University of São Paulo) | Edward Said Chair of Contemporary Studies | Dean of Extension and Culture, CineFértil, Brazilian Sleep Institute, Synapse, and Swiss Confederation.
