Doha: Dr. Ioannis G. Economou, associate dean for academic affairs and professor of chemical engineering at Texas A & M University at Qatar, has been elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
Fellow is AIChE’s highest grade of membership and is achieved only through election by the AIChE Board of Directors. According to the AIChE, this honour reaffirms the high esteem with which colleagues and peers view his distinctive professional achievements and accomplishments.
Economou said on his appointment,“This is a great honour for me and recognises almost 30 years of scholarship work in academia, national labs and industry. I have been fortunate to have worked with top PhD, Master’s and Undergraduate students as well as post-docs and fellow colleagues of high caliber all these years in various institutions in Europe, US and the Gulf. Being a faculty of Texas A & M University at Qatar during the last decade has been the highlight of my career and helped me tremendously in regional and international research collaborations.”
As associate dean for academic affairs, Economou is responsible for the coordination and management of all academic issues of the branch campus. He joined the Texas A & M at Qatar faculty in 2013. He previously was associate provost for graduate studies and professor of chemical engineering at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi (UAE). From 1995 to 2009, he worked at the National Center for Scientific Research“Demokritos” in Athens, Greece.
He holds a Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (Greece) and a PhD from The Johns Hopkins University (USA), both in chemical engineering. A world-renowned researcher, Economou’s work focuses on the design, development, validation and application of state-of-the art models to predict the structure and physical properties of complex chemical systems that are of interest to the oil-and-gas and chemical-processing industries, to the protection of the natural environment, and to society at large.
