Doha: The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) has announced the winners of the first three places in the Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry, which was held under a theme is 'Mothers of the Believers’.
Alaa Ahmed El Sayed Abdel Rahim from Egypt won the first prize for his poem 'Kamal Yaltaqi Al Bahran' (As Two Seas Meet). The second prize went to Ibrahim Issa Al Aslami from Yemen, for his poem 'Al Nakhat Al Ula’ (The First Palm). Muhammad Khouiti from Morocco received third prize for his poem 'Kahf Al Nubuwa’ (The Cave of Prophecy).
General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti praised the cultural and heritage initiatives launched by Qatari Women’s Pen Forum.
He said that the Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry, dedicated to the Mothers of the Believers, will be annual, and the first version of the award comes within the activities of 'Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021’, which includes 21 activities organised by Katara.
The total value of the Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry, 'Mothers of the Believers’ is about QR120,000 distributed over three categories — the first prize is QR60,000, the second prize is QR40,000, and the third prize is QR20,000.
The award received great response, as the number of participants reached 550. Egypt and Sudan topped the list with 207 participation, followed by the participation of the Levant and Iraq with about 151 participation, and the third place was the participation from Morocco with 113 entries, representing 20.55 percent of the total number the participation. A total of 77 entries from GCC countries and 10 entries from non-Arab countries were received.
The Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry, 'Mothers of the Believers’, is scheduled to be organised annually, provided that each of its sessions deals with a personality of the mothers of the believers, or a topic in their virtues or effects that will be predetermined by those in charge of the award.
For her part, Dr. Aisha Yousef Al Mannai, Chairman of the Board of the Qatari Women’s Pen Forum, said that the participants in the first edition exceeded all expectations, as it reached 550 participants, from Arab and foreign countries, which means the success of this initiative, which was decided to be annual to include all the mothers of the believers.
Prof. Dr. Maryam Abdul Rahman Al Nuaimi, Vice-Chairman of the Forum, said that the Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry 'Mothers of the Believers’ aims to promote the position of the House of Prophecy, especially the mothers of the believers in the memory of future generations.
