Another gold for Qatar as Barshim jumps season best

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Qatar’s two-time world champion Mutaz Barshim wins an Olympic gold medal at Tokyo in high jump bringing second gold medal for Qatar from Olympics 2020.

Qatar’s Barshim is joint gold medal winner as he and Italian Gianmarco Tamberi cleared 2.37m without any misses and failed to clear 2.39m.

Both jumpers agreed to share the gold medal in the high jump instead of a jump-off.

Maksim Nedasekau of Belarus won the Bronze medal in an exhilarating competition, which ended in a nail biting final jump where the Qatari and Italian became joint winners.

In a very high quality competition two jumpers set National Records, while 4 others jumped their season best.

At the 2012 London Games Barshim won a bronze, which was later upgraded to silver. He picked up another silver in Rio de Janeiro four years later and then won two successive world titles in 2017 and 2019.

His personal best of 2.43m is the second-highest jump of all time and is only behind Javier Sotomayor's world record mark of 2.45 set in 1993.

South Korean Woo Sang-hyeok and Australian Brandon Starc, the younger brother of cricketer Mitchell, both cleared 2.35 to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
