ALGIERS, July 31 (KUNA) -- Cervantes Cave is an Algerian archaeological and international cultural landmark related to an important historical period, during which the world-famous Spanish writer Miguel Cervantes remained captive for five years from 1575 to 1580.
The Cervantes Cave is maintained by the Algerian Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Spanish authorities; it is located at the bottom of a mountain in the municipality of Mohamed Belouizdad, in the center of Algiers.
Spanish authorities made considerable efforts to revive the landmark, restore and protect it from marginalization as well as highlighting it as a world heritage landmark.
The director of the Spanish Cultural Institute Raquel Romero bet on reviving the cave and organizing a number of celebrations with the passing of the anniversary of the writer's death (1547-1616). Cervantes also contributed greatly to the development of the usual narrative genres in the second half of the 16th century, such as the Byzantine and pastoral novel, satirical dialogue, and the varied teaching style, while he renewed the literary genre called the short novel, which was interpreted at the time according to the Italian model as short stories.
