(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Leader of the Servant of the People parliamentary faction Davyd Arakhamiya said that Ukraine, together with Poland, Lithuania, and other partners in Europe, would use all possible tools to prevent Russia from using gas and Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as a weapon.
"Today, an increasing number of political players, experts, and media outlets are talking about how vague the agreement between Biden and Merkel is and that it is a mistake. The agreement is not filled with the real content of guarantees for Ukraine, there are no legally binding steps to prevent Gazprom from using gas and any gas pipelines in Europe as weapons. In addition, this decision is not similar to the decision of America as such because it is actively criticized in Washington: both by Republican and Democratic members of the Congress," Arakhamiya said, the press service of the Servant of the People political party informs.
As Arakhamiya noted, Republicans openly call Nord Stream 2 a corrupt geopolitical project run by former intelligence officers and aimed to enrich Putin and split NATO.
"We clearly understand that America's strategic course and political decisions cannot be determined. Our task is only to convince that the protection of common values provides a greater result, including in the discussion on Nord Stream 2. And now there is still an opportunity to fill the framework agreement with Germany with concrete decisions and to work out steps that will allow to really ensure the fulfillment of the promises made by America. We believe that Gazprom should not feel at home in the European gas market," Arakhamiya stressed.
According to him, the pan-European energy rules should apply to all of Gazprom's activities in Europe and all of Russia's gas ambitions.
"To date, legal certainty and equal conditions for all are extremely important as this is the best safeguard against the game played against Europe. If modern European energy legislation covers, inter alia, Russia's ambitions, such as Nord Stream 2, they will simply lose their meaning. At the same time, I emphasize that Ukraine deserves to receive clear and most concrete security guarantees from the United States. The security issue is something that needs concrete and honest answer from our American partners," the faction leader summed up.
