KABUL: The United Nations envoy to Afghanistan in a meeting with chief Afghan negotiator in talks with Taliban called for acceleration of the negotiations to reach a negotiated settlement and end the war.

Deborah Lyons, the UN secretary-general's special representative for Afghanistan met the Afghan government chief negotiator Masoom Stanekzai on Monday, discussing the peace process and urged speeding up the stalled peace talks.

Lyons stressed the need for mediation to accelerate the peace talks and added that the UN works together with Qatar in this regard.

Stanekzai also stressed the importance of talks within the framework of the constitution of Afghanistan in his meeting with Lyons.

This comes as the Afghan government and Taliban agreed to begin the second round of peace talks in early august.
