Russia calls for resuming AU-brokered GERD talks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, July 22 (KUNA) -- Russia on Thursday called for resuming the tripartite negotiations on Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) under the auspices of the African Union (AU) to address differences.
Speaking at a news conference, Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Maria Zakharova urged the three countries - Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia - to continue talks on disputing issues after the end of the second phase of filling the dam, in light of Ethiopia's readiness for such talks.
Zakharova called on the three countries to deal with settling pending issues and reach "acceptable results to all" on a basis of "African solutions to the Africa issues".
During the last relevant UN Security Council discussions, Russia stood "at the same distance" from the three parties involved, she noted.
Last Monday, Ethiopia announced the completion of the second phase of filling the dam; however, Egypt and Sudan called on Ethiopia to sign a legally binding deal to organize ties regarding the dam, in line with international law, to maintain their water facilities and ensure the flow of their quotas from the Nile River.
