(MENAFN- UkrinForm)Ukraine wants stronger wording on security guarantees in the U.S.-German joint statement on the issue of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project completion.
That’s according to Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba who spoke at a joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto in Kyiv July 22, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy recalled that Ukraine and Poland in a joint statement issued on Wednesday set out their position on the U.S.-German statement regarding the completion of Nord Stream 2.
"We currently have many questions on how the U.S.-German agreement could reduce security risks for Ukraine and Central European countries, associated with the launch of Nord Stream 2. We will be talking about this with the United States and Germany. "We’ve been always saying honestly that for us, Nord Stream 2 is first and foremost a security issue, and we would like that the wording in the German-American statement on security be stronger," Kuleba said.
Commenting on the economic part of the statement, he noted Ukraine is studying the proposals put forward and will be ready to voice its position once a comprehensive and detailed analysis of what has been proposed is complete.
At the same time, the top diplomat noted a“fundamental problem” with not being able to predict whether Russia is ready to properly fulfill its obligations when it comes to Ukraine’s energy security and Ukraine’s role as a gas transit state.

Nord Stream 2 deal between U.S., Germany
“America and Germany have agreed on something, Poland and Ukraine have also agreed on something, but you and I, we all understand that the main beneficiary of the crisis created by Nord Stream 2 is the Russian Federation. And this is the main problem and the main question, the answer to which is currently unknown, so it is necessary to work on it," the minister concluded.
As Ukrinform wrote earlier, reports emerged in the U.S. media on the agreement reached between the Joe Biden administration and Angela Merkel's government, which would allow the completion of the gas pipeline in exchange for European security guarantees.

Nord Stream 2 launch
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said that, under the new agreement between Washington and Berlin, Germany undertakes to initiate sanctions against Russia if the latter resorts to a new act of aggression against Ukraine.
