Rio government approves subway control by Mubadala fund

São Paulo – Mubadala, an investment fund from the United Arab Emirates, now has the corporate control of the Concessionária Metroviária do Rio de Janeiro SA, MetrôRio, concession holder of the Rio de Janeiro city's subway system. The information was released in the Official Gazette of the State of Rio de Janeiro this week. The order was signed by the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro.

To ANBA, the state government confirmed the change but did not provide further details. MetrôRio's press office said that the company would not comment on the issue.

The control of Rio's subway system was previously held by Investimentos e Participações em Infraestrutura SA (Invepar), a group that operates in the airport, urban mobility, and highway segments. Invepar is the majority shareholder of GRU Airport, which controls the São Paulo International Airport in Guarulhos, the largest in South America in passenger numbers.

The news was released first hand by Ancelmo Gois, columnist of the O Globo newspaper. In his text, the journalist stated that the transaction had already been defined since, in September, the Arab fund collaborated in restructuring Invepar, which was in debt. According to Gois, with this, it was decided that Invepar would renounce the concession of the subway system and the Yellow Line, a highway inside the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Mubadala had the purchase of a Brazilian refinery approved last week. The plant belonged to Petrobras, and the transaction value was USD 1.65 billion.
