Doha: Qatar Museums has revealed the name and brand of Dadu: Children’s Museum of Qatar, the nation’s first institution to offer children and their families a dedicated place for learning and growth through inclusive, open-ended play, exploration, and experimentation.
Conceived as an oasis of stimulating, interactive, and accessible indoor and outdoor experiences in the heart of Doha, Dadu will nurture children’s development, inspire their curiosity, encourage collaboration and dialogue, provide the tools to fuel creativity and instil a sense of social responsibility.
'Dadu” is a word in classical Arabic describing marks made in the course of play or creative activity, from footmarks left on the ground to carvings on stones. The word has a strong presence in poetry, where it calls up images of children’s natural instinct for play and their joy and curiosity in exploring the world. The physical traces called 'dadu” are evidence that play is always an essential part of childhood.
The new museum has been developed under the leadership of H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, who has long believed in the lasting, positive impact on society of empowering children and their families.
Commenting on the brand reveal, Essa Al Mannai, Director of Dadu, said: 'We are delighted to unveil ‘Dadu’ as the official name of the Children’s Museum of Qatar – a title that expresses the project’s ambition to imprint new ideas and ways of seeing, relating and learning. Dadu’s learning and development model is grounded in child development psychology, brain science, and practice. The museum will have a strong focus on instilling the values of creativity, compassion, generosity, and responsibility.”
The naming follows Dadu’s years of engaging with families, schools, and community groups, including extensive recent online engagement programmes enabling children and families in Qatar to participate in fun, educational activities. While the museum has not yet opened its doors, it continues to carry out initiatives to support the children and families of Qatar.
The museum is rooted in local heritage and core values, including curiosity, inclusion, and community. It is being created to advance the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030 for human, social, economic, and environmental development. With programming for Qatari, resident, and expat families alike, it will offer each child who visits an opportunity to learn through play. Dadu will nurture the future leaders and caretakers of Qatar and the world.
Dadu will be Qatar’s first publicly funded museum, with all donors, families, and corporations contributing directly to the future of Qatar and its people.
