Turkish-US summit an opportunity to pluck thorns in ties

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Report by Taha Odeh
ISTANBUL, June 13 (KUNA) -- Turkey's political quarters are eagerly awaiting fruits of the scheduled summit talks between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Joe Biden, particularly with respect of tackling strains in the bilateral relations.
Presidents Erdogan and Biden, due to meet on margins of the NATO Summit in Brussels, due to kick off on Monday, are likely to examine Turkish-US ties that have been in limbo against backdrop of conflicting interests on the Middle East arena and Ankara's purchase of the Russian AS-400 missile networks.
Ankara's purchase of the advanced Russian missiles had prompted Washington to slap curbs on the Turkish military procurement agency, deepening the rifts in the bonds between the two NATO allies.
Erdogan, speaking on the official Turkish television station a few days ago, affirmed that he and his American counterpart would discuss the shaky bonds.
For his part, the foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has declared that Washington desires to cooperate with Ankara on various files in the Middle East, the Caucases and the Black Sea.
Political observers believe that thawing the ice in these difficult relations will not be an easy task, largely due to the conflicting interests between the two countries at diverse levels.
The observes believe that the US-Turkish relations will remain largely volatile despite consensus on some affairs where the two sides'' interests are in harmony.
Washington recognizes Turkey's role on some arenas namely the Middle East, the Caucuses and Central Asia, but seeks to contain such influence. Erdogan for his part is keen on opening a new chapter in the relations with the US and the European Union to try cope with the recurring economic crises at home.
In brief, the intersection of interests between the two powers may be the particular motive for elevating the level of the relations. (end)
