International momentum for using hydrogen as an energy source -- OAPEC

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, June 8 (KUNA) -- Secretary General of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) Ali Bin Sabt said on Tuesday that there is an "unprecedented" international momentum for using hydrogen as an energy source, given its contribution to achieving a low-carbon global economy.
This came in a speech by Bin Sabt during his participation in the dialogue session held within the activities of the first Arab-Indian Energy Cooperation Forum, which was held via video communication technology on the transition to clean energy.
Bin Sabt explained that recent years have witnessed a growing interest by governments on diversifying energy sources to reach a more sustainable, cleaner and efficient energy, noting that this option faced a number of technical and economic challenges that hindered its widespread use in some sectors such as the transportation sector.
He added that the Arab countries were keen to highlight the importance of integration between natural gas and renewable energy sources in the energy system, which contributes to improving energy efficiency, raising the flexibility of the energy system and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
He stated that a number of Arab countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman and Morocco have shown great interest in investing in hydrogen production projects.
He pointed out that the Arab countries can be pioneers in the field of blue hydrogen production based on natural gas with the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to provide raw material at a competitive cost, ensuring the continued development of their natural gas resources, taking into account international trends in reducing carbon emissions.
