Aboul Gheit welcomes US decision to reopen US Consulate in Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Cairo, May 28, 2021, SPA -- The Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the US decision to reopen the US consulate in East Jerusalem as an important step towards strengthening relations between Washington and the Palestinians.
Aboul Gheit said in a statement on Thursday that this step is a correction of a mistake made by the previous administration to close the consulate, which for decades remained a diplomatic bridge between the US and Palestine, stressing that it reflects a positive approach by the current US administration, especially in terms of the clear recognition of the two-state solution as the only way to resolve the Palestinian and Israeli conflict.
The Secretary-General underlined that East Jerusalem is part of the territories occupied in 1967, and it represents the capital of the future Palestinian state, stressing that the reopening of the US consulate in the occupied city reflects an American awareness of the importance of preserving the foundations of the two-state solution, which has become increasingly eroded by Israeli restrictions and illegal settlement construction.
