How To Increase The Longevity And Durability Of Your Diesel Engine With Aftermarket Parts

The mid-sized diesel truck has, over time, become popular among the younger generation. Partly because diesel engines are more durable, and modern diesel engines offer a greater source of power potential.

When you take that already powerful engine and tweak it the right way, it will offer better torque and power like turbocharged engines or pulling trucks and drag racers to increase capacity. By changing the injection timing and boost, the engine comes to life with more power. But also, with doing this, you have to ensure you maintain the engine and its components to obtain dependability, efficiency, and longevity.

Diesel pistons

Pistons come in a variety of configurations depending on the application. Most aftermarket pistons for diesel applications are usually cast aluminum which offers better durability and longevity needed for work application and everyday driving. The piston bowls have design features that limit erosion issues caused by injection timing and high pressure over time. The piston skirts can be coated for reduced scuff and drag resistance.

A forged piston is usually the better choice for higher horsepower applications such as drag racing or pulling. For gasoline engines, forged pistons are the better choice for high-performance engine builds. However, with diesel engines, the forged pistons are subject to high temperatures and pressure for extended periods. The key to making pistons last longer is the steel top ring insert that protects the top ring groove. Without the steel insert, the top ring groove will have accelerated wear and lead to decreased performance.

Keep in mind that if you consider getting the forged pistons for your applications sooner or later, they will need to be replaced. But the best choice for your diesel applications would be an all forged steel piston. This is because the steel construction will have no issues with the high pressures that cause erosion, and they are great for the longevity and durability of your diesel engine.

The only disadvantage of the steel forged piston is its availability, cost, and weight. But with the right design, you can make the piston and pin combination to match the aluminum piston.

Crankshafts

As for crankshafts, diesel engines come with a standard forged crankshaft with a 1020 or 4340 alloy. The coherence of the crankshafts is usually not a problem when creating more power. However, a forged crankshaft can only take so much before it starts to fail under harsh conditions. Billet crankshafts are being produced for mid-sized diesel engines such as the Duramax or the Cummins to handle a lot of power and climbing.

As the diesel engine revolutions continue to rise, the valve train usually becomes unstable. Diesel engines have been designed to operate at lower RPM. When you install a performance camshaft and the engine runs at a higher RPM, then the part of the valve train will begin to fail. However, aftermarket manufacturers have come up with different solutions to help stabilize the top ends so you can achieve maximum power and reliability.

Forced induction

No single modification can increase your engine horsepower output and performance other than a turbocharger or supercharger. A turbocharger works where exhaust gases spin in a turbine, turning the compressor that forces air resulting in increased power. Superchargers, on the other hand, work a lot like turbochargers but with a belt-driven compressor. Boost builds earlier, so you will never experience turbo lag. Superchargers give you more of a power boost in the low RPM range, while turbochargers need exhaust gases to build up as the RPM increases.

A complete turbo kit can cost you around $2,500 - $10,000 depending on the turbo size, expected boost pressure, specialized coatings, etc. Superchargers range from $1,600 for the basic kits and upward of $5,000 for the polished kits. Suppose you have a turbo equipped straight from the factory. In that case, there are still some parts you can upgrade without replacing the OEM turbo, which increases the existing turbo’s efficiency, reliability, and longevity.

Valve springs

Valve springs are usually changed, and there are many designs available to fit most applications. When there is an increase in the valve pressure, a need for a bigger pushrod is needed.

Most modern-day diesel engines incorporate the use of roller lifters which sometimes fail and need to be upgraded. Most aftermarket manufacturers have thicker wall rocker shafts and valve bridges that help control the deflection from the increased demands of the other components.

Connecting rods

Connecting rods are also a concern when you need to increase your engine’s power. For years the diesel connecting rods were made of forged steel. As technology developed, the use of powered metal offered a more cost-effective solution, proving to be more durable for OE applications.  However, when there is an increase in power, the powered metal connecting rods can fail because they cannot handle the cylinder pressures and torque loads.

Aftermarket manufacturers offer 4340 forged connecting rods with the addition of chrome, moly, vanadium, and nickel. You can also get the H11 tool, although they are costly. They are deep hardened steel that usually has minimal size change during the heat treatment process due to its balanced alloy content. The H11 offers excellent resistance to thermal fatigue, cracking, and shock. Aftermarket connecting rods provide a lifetime of use and can be reconditioned at a fraction of the cost.

 Please note that aftermarket components are made of stronger materials to withstand the harsh environment most diesel engines are subjected to. The materials used to create the parts will determine the cost.  Connecting rods for mid-sized engines can cost upwards of $4,000 a set.
