DFI offers online labs to filmmakers, screenwriters

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Doha Film Institute (DFI) is calling participants to take part in a series of film labs to be conducted online. On its official social media accounts, the Institute has said it will be organising First Cut Lab, Hezayah Online Screenwriting Lab, and Series Lab.

The special online First Cut Lab is ''designed to assist two feature films (fiction/documentary) from Qatar or the MENA region and two short films from Qatar in the editing phase to achieve the artistic potential of the selected rough cuts and increase the sales, festival, and circulation potential of the completed films,” said DFI.

The lab consists of a brief preparatory meeting and workshops tailored to each project (one-day workshop for shorts and two-day workshop for features). Expert mentors include First Cut Lab creator and Director Matthieu Darras, and Editor Mentors Benjamin Mirguet and Sebastian Sepúlveda.

Those interested to join the lab may submit their applications until May 22 via DFI’s website where they can find all the details. Hezayah Online Screenwriting Lab, on the other hand, is catered to emerging screenwriters and writer-directors looking to develop and write an original feature-length screenplay.

The lab will see virtual group sessions and one-on-one tutorials under the mentorship of acclaimed Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, renowned screenwriter Joelle Touma, and Lab Advisor, Matthieu Darras.

Applications can be submitted until June 7.

For the new cycle of its Series Lab, DFI is calling screenwriters developing scripted series projects created for distribution on all platforms for a chance to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge needed to write and pitch their series project.

They will be working with accomplished mentors and story editors in generating ideas and structuring their material. Deadline for application is June 14.

These labs are an integral part of DFI’s training and development initiatives which nurture filmmakers by providing them opportunities for skills-sharing, feedback and direction from mentors in an atmosphere of curiosity and inclusivity.

Through its range of training and development programmes, DFI aspires ''to expose filmmakers to the full range of cinematic styles, ideas and approaches in order to situate their work within the broader context of the art of cinema.”
