MARDAN: On the eve of Eidul Fitr, Najma from Gujjar Garhi area of Mardan is worried about lockdown as she cannot go for shopping and people will have to spend Eid at home.

She said while talking to TNN that Eid is an occasion for festivities and celebrations, but like previous year, people will have to console themselves with simple celebrations due restrictions imposed by the government to stem the spread of coronavirus.

''What kind of Eid this would be when we would not be able to go to our relatives and they won''t come either. Don''t know when this virus will come to an end and people would resume their normal lives,'' she said.

The federal government has imposed countrywide lockdown from May 08-16 during which all the picnic spots and shopping centres in the country, including Mardan will remain closed.

Mardan Public Safety Committee member Haji Abdul Aziz said all the Eid cultural activities have been cancelled owing to coronavirus lockdown. He said family gala, seminars, workshops etc used to be organised during Eid days, but nothing will happen this year.

Rizwana, a housewife in Mardan, said she faced a lot of difficulties while doing shopping for Eid. She said the clothes and shoes of her choice were not available in market due to restrictions. She said the children at home are also teasing her as they also could not get items of their choice. She said it is impossible to fulfil wishes of her children this year due to lockdown.

Shopkeepers are also not happy under these circumstances and say they suffered massive losses since the outbreak of coronavirus.

Salman, a local shopkeeper, told TNN that it is second year that he is facing losses during Eid. He said he is providing items to some relatives and friends through online bookings, but dispatching items to home addresses during this harsh weather is a very difficult task.

On the other hand, Deputy Commissioner Arif Habib says the district administration will make efforts for full implementation of corona standard operating procedures (SOPs) during Eid. He appealed to people to cooperate with the administration.
