23 Prisoners Covid Positive In J&# K Jails

Srinagar: At least 23 prisoners have been tested positive for novel coronavirus in three jails of Jammu and Kashmir while no case of Covid-19 has been detected among the 635 inmates lodged at Srinagar's Central Jail, a top police official said Tuesday.

According to an official spokesperson, V. K. Singh, DGP, Prisons on Tuesday visited Central jail Srinagar to resolve last minute issues including a parole case. His visit came a day after prior to relinquishing his charge.

DG directed the staff for strict adherence to SOPs issued to prevent spread of COVID-19 in jails.

''At present, 635 inmates are lodged in the Central Jail Srinagar which included 27 female inmates and there is no COVID positive case in the jail,'' the official spokesperson said, adding that 4572 inmates are lodged in the 13 jails of the Union Territory.

He further said that 23 inmates —21 in district jail Kathua, one each from Kot Bhalwal and district jail Jammu are Covid positive and are being given necessary medical care.

''Presently, 219 inmates are under quarantine across prisons of J & K as new prisoners undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing and quarantine for 14 days,'' the official spokesperson added.
