Southeast Asian figures show continued spread of COVID-19


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (KUNA) -- Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand each updated their coronavirus statistics on Saturday, with government data showing that the pandemic continues to spread across the region.
Indonesia's health ministry reported 179 new deaths linked to the virus and 6,130 confirmed cases, bringing the caseload to 1,709,752 and total fatalities to 46,842.
Elsewhere, the Philippines said its daily-confirmed cases jumped by 6,979 to a cumulative total of 1,094,849, while 170 new fatalities pushed the archipelago's death toll from the outbreak to 18,269.
In Malaysia, health authorities said single-day cases rose by 4,519 to a total of 436,944, as the death toll jumped to 1,657 after 25 additional fatalities attributed to the respiratory illness.
In Thailand, some 81,274 people have contracted the virus since the contagion first came to light, 382 of whom have died. (end)
