(MENAFN- The Conversation) Professor of Climate Change Mitigation and Inequality,
Harald Winkler is a Professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT). His research interests focus on inequality and climate change mitigation. He has published on topics ranging equity, sustainable development, energy-environment linkages, transparency, and the economics of mitigation. His work is focused on South Africa, Africa, the global South and internationally. Based in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at UCT, his approach is transdisciplinary.
His research has informed energy and climate policy at the national level and multi-lateral negotiations. Harald led the research work underpinning South Africa's Long-Term Mitigation Scenarios (LTMS). In 2011, he started working with other developing countries to share the LTMS experience in a programme called MAPS – Mitigation Action Plans and Scenarios.
Harald is joint Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Climate Policy, and serves on several editorial boards.
Prof Winkler has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as 13 chapters in peer-reviewed books, published two books and three edited volumes. Academic ratings include NRF B2 (''internationally acclaimed researcher'') and h-index of 20 on Scopus.
Harald is a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Working Group III on mitigation, has been a member of the SA delegation to the negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement, has served on the Methodologies Panel to the CDM Executive Board, and participates in advisory bodies to local and provincial government.
