Egypt’s ministers, U.S. envoy hold discussions on Ethiopian Nile dam

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, May. 5 the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated in a report that Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aty held discussions with U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) constructed on the Nile River.

The assembly was conducted "in order to discuss the developments of the GERD file and the Egyptian position in this regard", stated the Egyptian ministry with no further details.

New tripartite talks between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia didn’t manage to produce a legally binding deal on the regulations of filling and operating the GERD.

Ethiopia, an upstream Nile basin nation, conducted the first stage of filling the dam unilaterally in July last year and is arranging to progress with the second stage in July 2021 in spite of the worries of Egypt and Sudan.
