UN emissary, Libyan parliament speaker talk about political, security development

On Wednesday, May. 5 the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) stated that its head Jan Kubis has talked about new political and security development in Libya with Speaker of the House of Representatives Agila Saleh in the eastern Libyan city of al-Qubba.

UNSMIL stated in a report: "during the meeting (UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres') Special Envoy (on Libya) briefed on key elements of UN Security Council Resolutions 2570 (2021) and 2571 (2021), particularly in relation to the political process and the call for holding elections on 24 December this year, as well as the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement and withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries."

The report further said: "in this regard, Special Envoy Kubis and Speaker Saleh discussed ways to expedite the process of clarifying a constitutional and legal framework for the elections."

The report noted that the assembly discussed the significance of the early adoption of the budget and of advancing in the unification of military and security institutions so as to safeguard the Libyan territorial integrity and preserve its stability, on the necessity to begin the DDR (disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration) and SSR (security sector reform) procedure, as well as on the procedure concerning sovereign positions.
