Canada registers trade surplus in Jan.-Mar. period


(MENAFN) On Tuesday, May. 4 Statistics Canada said that the country’s international trade registered a surplus of 1.5 billion Canadian dollars (around USD1.2 billion) in the January-March period of this year, the first surplus since the last quarter of 2016.

During the first three months of this year, Canada’s exports soared 8.3 percent to about USD124 billion, the highest value since the April-June period of 2019.

Export prices climbed 6.6 percent in the first three months of the year as exports of energy products rose 31.2 percent and aircraft and other transportation equipment and parts soared 43.6 percent whereas forestry products rose 11.9 percent.

In the meantime, imports climbed 0.5 percent reaching USD122,8 billion because of higher imports of energy products.
