KABUL: The United Nations Security Council expressed its deep concerns over the rising civilian causalities, the high level of violence and the security situation in Afghanistan.

The Security Council in a statement condemned in the strongest terms the 'atrocious and cowardly' terrorist attack that took place in Pul-e-Alam city of Logar Province in the holy month of Ramadan that killed 24 mostly high school students and wounded 110 others.

Most of the killed were young students who had come to Pul-e-Alam for attending university entrance exams.

The Security Council also wished speedy recovery to the wounded, and sent their condolences to the families of the dead ones.

The council called that the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of the attack be held accountable and brought to justice.

The Security Council condemned terrorism in all its forms which pose a serious threat to world peace and stability.

The Security Council stressed the need for halting the ongoing war in the devastated country to prevent civilian causalities.

Taliban have not claimed responsibility for the Logar attack but the Afghan government blamed the insurgent group for carrying out the attack.

This comes as violence has recently intensified across the country.
