Chadian people urged to stay calm after rebel intrusion

(MENAFN) On Monday, Chadian communication minister and government representative Cherif Mahamat Zene urged the population to calm down after brutal conflicts between the army and protesters during the weekend.

Mahamat Zene said in a twitter statement that "I want by my voice to reassure that there is nothing, absolutely nothing that can justify the panic that a part of the population is seized with because of the malicious propaganda on social networks. I, therefore, appeal for calm."

A Chadian army spokesperson said on Monday that at least 300 troops were confirmed dead and 150 others, counting three top chiefs, detained on Saturday in Chad's western Kanem province.

Based on local media reports, this came as a response to an attack by the Front for Alternation and Concord in Chad (FACT), an armed rebel group based in neighboring Libya.
