Egyptian passenger train goes off tracks, claims several lives

On Sunday, a train derailed just north of the Egyptian capital Cairo, resulting in many deaths and injuries.

The accident took place when the Cairo-Mansura passenger train 949 went off the tracks in the city of Qalyubia, the National Railways Authority of Egypt said in a statement.


The initial number of deaths was put at eight, whereas more than 100 people sustained injuries, according to an official source, who asked to be unidentified.

Ambulances were sent to the scene as rescuers continue their work.
