The Indian government in the national capital New Delhi announced on Monday a 7-day lockdown to halt the spread of the COVID-19, as more than 273,000 coronavirus cases were reported across the country during the last 24-hour period.

Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Monday afternoon in a statement that “From tonight 10 pm to next Monday 5 am, for six days, there will be a lockdown in Delhi. During this period, all essential services will be available.”

New Delhi has reported a great surge in the number of coronavirus cases, with the daily infections touching over 25,000 on Sunday.

Kejriwal revealed that Delhi’s health system has touched its limit. “It is under stress. Harsh measures will have to be taken to prevent a collapse of the health system,” according to him.
However, the minister noted that: “I don't say that the system has collapsed but it has reached its limits.”
