Communist Party of Cuba launches historic four-day Congress

(MENAFN)The Communist Party of Cuba launched a historic four-day Congress, in which the Caribbean island will witness the last of the Castro brothers leave the political scene.

Six decades after the government led by Fidel and Raul Castro was installed after the leftist 1959 revolution, Raul has declared that he is going to resign as First Secretary of the Communist Party, Cuba's most powerful position.

Fidel Castro’s younger brother stated in 2016 that he would resign at the party's eighth congress and give the reins to new generations of revolutionaries managed by Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Castro is estimated to concede the post to Diaz-Canel, whose presidency has showed permanence of the socialist model.
