(MENAFN - Gulf Times) The 1st International Waste Management Conference, organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), will kick off Monday with the participation of representatives governmental and private institutions and international and regional experts and specialists in waste management and disposal.
Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs at the MME Eng. Ahmed Mohamed al-Sada said the ministry aims to organise the hybrid two-day event to develop a waste management system and promote environmental awareness by shedding light on the most recent waste management methods which seek produce energy, fertilisers, and recyclable materials.
It also seeks to promote community participation in environment protection and encourage investment in this field.
The conference attracts many governmental and private institutions and international and regional bodies to see and learn about the latest technology in waste management, treatment, and disposal.
He added that the conference is an opportunity to keep up with the latest waste management technologies, including domestic and solid waste, construction and demolition waste, water and soil waste, waste from oil, gas, and petrochemical projects, as well as hazardous, medical and sanitation waste.
Al-Sada noted that the conference will shed light on the achievements of local institutions, entities, companies and factories in environmental technologies and waste recycling and management as well as their commitment to binding international standards in their processes.
It will also address their social responsibility activities and provide an opportunity to share experiences and present the latest methods to fight pollution.
According to al-Sada, the conference will discuss, through presentations, workshops and panel discussions, many topics related to waste management and recycling, including: circular economy (opportunities and challenges), integration between the public and private sectors (mechanism for obtaining land for recycling companies in the Al-Afja area), modern technologies for converting waste into energy, converting waste into fuel, smart management for waste collection and transportation, waste treatment, research and development (opportunities and benefits), management and modern technologies (food waste), and the Covid-19 pandemic (dangerous medical waste and challenges), new technologies and recycling solutions.
For his part, Director of the Public Relations Department at the MME Abdullah Mohamed al-Falasi confirmed that due to the importance of the conference, which is organised by the ministry for the first time, a comprehensive media plan has been prepared through various audio-visual and print media and social media sites to introduce the conference, its goals and various activities, in addition to highlighting the efforts of the State in waste management and recycling, as well as raising public awareness of the importance of recycling and its positive implications for the safety of the environment and society.
He pointed out that the holding of the first waste conference considering the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, and after the success of the MME in organising the Qatar International Agricultural & environmental Exhibition recently, confirms Qatar's interest to develop all its sectors, in implementation of its sustainable strategy and in accordance with the second national strategy 2018-2022 and Qatar National Vision 2030.
Al-Falasi explained that visual and virtual communication technology will be used to broadcast the conference proceedings and the accompanying sessions directly through the conference website www.wmdoha.com, where specialists and interested people from within Qatar and various countries of the world can follow the sessions and discussions over the next two days.
