(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar Charity (QC) has opened the Fateh Al-Andalus Educational Centre in Galmudug state of Somalia, in a ceremony attended by many official and academic figures.
The opening of the centre came as part of QC's attention to the education sector in the country, a press statement noted. The centre aims to provide educational and cultural services and contribute to raising school attendance rates.

The number of beneficiaries is estimated at 350 male and female students. The location of the project was chosen due to the region's greater need for such services.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of State for Education in Galmudug, Mursal Abd Adam, thanked the people in Qatar and the Qatari leadership for supporting the Somali people. He also appreciated QC's role in supporting the educational sector of his country by implementing many educational and cultural projects in all the states of Somalia, with support from benefactors in Qatar.
From the opening ceremony Professor Abdelkader Mohamed Sharou, former president of Galkayo University, considered the centre as a qualitative addition to the region in the field of education, praising the role of Qatar Charity in supporting the education sector and contributing to development in Somalia.
'I pay attention to Qatar Charity's social and development projects in Somalia since the opening of its office in the country, and I believe that 70% of the sponsored Somali orphans are those sponsored by Qatar Charity, said Dr Abdul Razzaq Ahmed Dilmer, former president of Benadir University, noting the various other projects implemented by QC in Somalia.
Qatar Charity recently opened educational and development projects in the Somali city of Kismayo, in Jubaland state.
The first project is a multi-service centre that includes a school, a mosque, a green square, a surface well, a clinic, a centre for memorising the Holy Qur'an and shops.
The second project consists of houses for the poor that includes 24 housing units and a mosque.
In November, QC inaugurated a multi-service centre and a charity bakery in Baidoa in the southwestern Bay region of Somalia.
The centre is the first of its kind in the region, which provides various educational, social and developmental services to the people. The project is expected to benefit the people of Baidoa, the statement adds.
The charity bakery aims to lessen the suffering of the drought-hit people by providing free bread to 2,000 families daily.
