Doha: Acclaimed film visionaries Claire Denis, James Gray, Jessica Hausner, Mark Mangini and Phedon Papamichael are the Qumra Masters for the largest virtual edition of Doha Film Institute's (DFI) annual industry incubator event for exceptional talent happening from March 12 to 17.
This influential group of filmmakers will provide unique creative development and mentorship opportunities online to filmmakers of 48 selected projects from 21 countries including 19 from Qatar.
Widely regarded as one of Europe's most distinctive auteurs, Claire Denis will be speaking on her collaborative approach to filmmaking as she takes participants through her body of work which continues to influence European cinematic identity. Denis's first feature film was Chocolat, a semi-autobiographical story of racial tension in colonial Africa in the 1950s screened at Cannes Film Festival. In 1996, she won the Golden Leopard Locarno for Nenette and Boni.
World-renowned director, screenwriter and Cannes veteran James Gray, on the other hand, will share his personal approach to filmmaking and how he captures the full range and depth of human emotions in his work. New York City native, Gray, made his feature directorial debut with the crime drama Little Odessa at the age of 25, which won the Silver Lion award at the 51st Venice International Film Festival. He has made six other features, four of which competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Jessica Hausner
Esteemed Austrian film director and screenwriter Jessica Hausner will discuss her passion for cinema and what she draws on for inspiration in her films that often depict defiant portrayals of female protagonists, love and the human condition. Hausner studied directing at the Film Academy of Vienna where she made the award-winning short films Flora and Inter-View, which won the Jury Prize of the Cannes Cinéfondation. Her feature Lourdes, won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 66th Venice Film Festival. She was appointed member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017.
Academy Award-winning sound designer Mark Mangini will share the vital importance of sound in realising the full gamut of creative expression in filmmaking. With over four decades of experience, Mangini has an extensive body of work as supervising sound editor, sound designer, and recording mixer earning him five Oscar nominations for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Aladdin, The Fifth Element, and Blade Runner 2049. He won the award in 2015 for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road.
Internationally acclaimed cinematographer and Oscar nominee, Phedon Papamichael will take participants through his extensive body of work, which is celebrated for its versatile array of visual styles.
Papamichael counts over 45 features to his credit as director of photography, including the early blockbusters, While You Were Sleeping, Cool Runnings and Phenomenon, all directed by Jon Turteltaub. He was nominated for both the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for Payne's 2013 film Nebraska.
