(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union, Armin Laschet, has supported the idea of giving Ukraine an EU membership perspective, Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany Andrij Melnyk has said on Twitter.
"We must support Ukraine on its difficult path and also open up a European perspective," Melnyk quoted Laschet as saying in an interview with German media outlets.
In addition, in his first interview since his election as the new head of the Christian Democratic Union, the politician supported the idea of keeping sanctions against Russia in place and called for further rapprochement between Kyiv and Brussels.
Laschet is the Minister-President of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. After heading the party after the internal party vote, he is one of the most likely persons to become the new German chancellor.
