American judge elected as new president of International Court of Justice


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Feb 8 (KUNA) -- Judge Joan Donoghue from the US was Monday elected President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Judge Kirill Gevorgian of Russia elected Vice-President, each for a term of three year.
Donoghue is as member of the ICJ since 9 September 2010 and was re-elected as from 6 February 2015, according to an ICJ press release.
Donoghue will replace Abdulqawi Yusuf from Somalia who was the President of the ICJ from 6 February 2018 to 8 February 2021. Yusuf remains a judge among the 15 judges elected for a nine-year term.
There are also two judges in the ICJ from the Arab world, Mohamed Bennouna from Morocco and Nawaf Salam from Lebanon.
The International Court of Justice based at the Hague is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945 and began its activities in April 1946. (end)
