(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) JAMRUD: The Livestock Department of Khyber tribal district on Saturday distributed chicken among people under the poultry scheme.
A ceremony in this regard was organised at Civil Veterinary Hospital Jamrud where Assistant Director Livestock Dr Waheedullah was the chief guest, while senior doctor of veterinary Riaz Orakzai, poultry project in-charge Dr Khadim Hussain and other officials were also present.
On the occasion, Dr Waheedullah cut the ribbon to inaugurate the domestic poultry program. He distributed poultry units among the poor and deserving people.
Speaking to media, Dr Waheedullah said all the people who had submitted forms for poultry units last year will be given chicken. He said chicken units comprising five hens and a cock are being given to each applicant, including women. He said the purpose of the scheme is to promote domestic poultry farming and providing a small source of income to financially weak families in merged tribal districts.
Dr Waheedullah said the process of poultry units distribution in Pakistan was stopped after the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, which has resumed now after improvement in the pandemic situation.
To a question, the livestock official said 1,260 units are being distributed in Jamrud. He said the hens are laying eggs which can be used for consumption by the beneficiaries of the scheme and can also be used for small business. He said this scheme has the potential to make the poor households affected by militancy to stand on their own feet once again.
Dr Waheedullah said the chicken units will also be distributed in Bara today (Sunday) and in Landikotal tomorrow (Monday). He appealed to beneficiaries of the scheme not to create unnecessary gathering and indiscipline as all the applicants will get the units on their turn. He said the process will be completed smoothly if the people fully cooperate with the Livestock Department.
Last month, the Livestock Department of Lower Dir launched distribution of chickens under the Backyard Poultry Initiative.
District Director Livestock Dr Khalilur Rehman and former village council nazim Ijaz Ahmad inaugurated the distribution. Ijaz Ahmad said the program announced by the prime minister would provide protein to the under-nourished population. He said the project would prove helpful for improvement of home budgets.
