118 Taliban rebels killed in round-the-clock raids

KABUL: At least 118 Taliban insurgents have been killed, 36 wounded and another 10 were detained in reciprocal operation of the Afghan National Army members in the past 24 hours, the Afghan Defense Ministry said on Friday.

They were killed and arrested in Kunar, Ghazni, Urzgan, Kunduz, Kandahar and Helmand provinces.

36 Taliban rebels were killed and 12 others were wounded in Zherai, Panjwae and Arghandab districts of Kandahar province, the statement added.

14 Taliban insurgents were killed and two others were wounded during preemptive operation of ANA in Gizab district of Uruzgan province. They were planning to attack the ANA positions when they were targeted by ANA. Also, a large amount of their weapons were destroyed, the statement added.

17 landmines that were planted by the Taliban in different parts of these provinces, were also discovered and neutralized by the Afghan National Army, the statement added.

The army also prevented a car bomb attack in Ghazni province along the number one highway. The Taliban wanted to target an ANA base with the car bomb. Additionally, eight Taliban were killed and one was wounded during reciprocal attacks and the airstrikes.

It's worth mentioning that despite the start of the second round of intra-Afghan talks in Doha of Qatar, clashes are ongoing in several provinces that at somehow undermined the process to end the violence.
