IHF World Men's Handball Championship to kick off in Egypt tomorrow


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Jan 12 (KUNA) -- The 2021 IHF World Men's Handball Championship, will kick off tomorrow in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, with the participation of 32 teams behind closed doors amid health restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Championship will be played in four venues in Alexandria, Cairo, Giza and the New Administrative Capital.
The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four teams. Each venue hosts two groups of the preliminary round, which is played from 13 to 19 January.
Group A: Germany, Hungary, Uruguay and Cape Verde.
Group B: Spain, Tunisia, Brazil and Poland.
Group C: Croatia, Qatar, Japan and Angola.
Group D: Denmark, Argentina, Bahrain and Congo.
Group E: Norway, Austria, France and USA.
Group F: Portugal, Algeria, Iceland and Morocco.
Group J: Sweden, Egypt, Czech and Chile.
Group H: Slovenia, Belarus, South Korea and Russia.
The top three teams of their respective preliminary round groups move on to the main round (January 20-25), while the teams ranked last in their preliminary round groups play the President's Cup.
The 24 main round teams are divided into four groups of six teams each.
The top two teams of the main round groups advance to the knock-out stage, which starts with the quarter-finals on January 27, then continues with the semi-finals on 29 January. On the final day, January 31, the match for third place and the gold-medal match are played. (end)
