Qatari artist's exhibition highlights Battle of Khafji

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Contemporary Qatari artist Maetha Al Khayarin archives and documents Qatar's recent political history with particular focus on the historic Battle of Khafji in a solo exhibition currently on show at Sikkat Wadi Msheireb.

The '1991 Battle of Al Khafji exhibition, according to the artist, is a document of the contemporary history of Qatar, a research-based project, and a mixed media installation presented in five parts.
The Battle of Khafji was the first major ground engagement of the Gulf War which took place in and around Khafji city in Saudi Arabia from January 29 to February 1 in 1991, marking the end of the coalition's air campaign over Kuwait and Iraq. During the battle, Saudi and Qatari forces attempted to retake control of the city, aided by coalition aircraft and US artillery.
Al Khayarin, who finished BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, creates artworks based on filed information which she gathers through extensive research.
For this project, the artist utilized different materials and media to present significant chapters in the country's history in a creative and captivating way.
In one of the sections of the exhibition, the artist showcases a series of images based on found photographs on the recent political history of Qatar and the GCC which were made using a photographic printing process that produces cyan-blue print. In producing the images, she has particularly chosen to utilize chemicals used to heal wounds.
Another section of the exhibition displays photos related to the major expansion of Qatari Air Force in terms of combat aircraft and how it contributed aircraft to conduct strikes against Iraqi forces during the Gulf War.
The exhibition also features a unique installation comprising a poem, old chairs, and video which according to the artist was aimed towards producing visual and sound artifacts that further elucidate on the 1991 battle and recent conflicts.
A massive mosaic of photos of memorable moments of the Qatari forces taken during the battle is another major attraction at the show.
The exhibition has been organized by AlHosh Art Gallery with the support of Seashore Qatar. The gallery was founded in 2008 to highlight Qatari and Middle Eastern artists through exhibitions and art projects.
The exhibition is open to the public until January 15 at AlHosh Art Gallery at Sikkat Wadi Msheireb.
