The principle underlying evaporative cooling is the fact that water must have heat applied to it to change from a liquid to a vapour. When evaporation occurs, this heat is taken from the water that remains in the liquid state, resulting in a cooler liquid. Applying this principle, cooling machines have been formulated, which can be used on both domestic and industrial scale. There are primarily two types of evaporative coolers: direct, and indirect.
In a direct evaporative cooler, a blower forces air through a permeable and water-soaked pad. As the air is passing through the pad, it is filtered and cooled as well as humidified. On the other hand, an indirect type evaporative cooler carries a secondary heat exchanger that prevents humidity levels from being increased in the airstream that enters the cooling area.

Market Dynamics
Although these devices have huge utility, there are several factors that could drive their demand upwards or could affect it negatively. Evaporative coolers are very cost effective and efficient in regions where extremely low temperatures are not needed. They also have comparatively better carbon footprint stats as compared to refrigerant based cooling systems.
They have huge demand in tropical regions, specially the ones that face dry heat waves. In contrast to more sophisticated cooling systems, these provide more flexibility in usage, ensuring fresh air flow as well. However one major restraining factor for their demand is that evaporative coolers do not function efficiently in humid climates. Also, in areas of low water supply, this added water demand could further aggravate the situation.

The market is segmented primarily in terms of geography and type. Considering geography, evaporative coolers are highly ideal for arid regions with low dewpoint conditions, limiting it to dry climates. The other factor, type, categorises this market into following types: roof mounted, central cooling systems, and horizontal units(which could be window mounted or ground based). While roof mounted are ideal for larger homes, horizontal ones are suitable for cooling of small rooms. The other segmentation factors could include application- whether the cooler is to be utilized for industrial or domestic utility.
