A massive explosion killed 3 individuals in Ethiopia's capital city of Addis Ababa, an Ethiopian spokesman said on Sunday.

Alemayehu Ayalqe, head of the Addis Ababa Police Department's Special and Organized Crime Division, confirmed three street children died as they attempted to handle an explosive they discovered discarded in the city's open field.

Five other people were injured in the grenade explosion, Ayalqe said.

In order to prevent unintended accidents and deaths, he also called on members of the public to first alert the police should they come across discarded items.

Currently, the police are investigating the source of the grenade and who may be responsible for dumping the grenade in the Addis Ababa open area.
