An advanced fully equipped Sleep Laboratory at Al-Ahli Hospital diagnosis and treats sleep disorders. The sleep clinics and laboratory under the Pulmonary and Chest Department at Al-Ahli Hospital, at present care for adults with sleeping disorders due to different reasons.

'It has all advanced facilities and sleep studies collect data about what is happening in a person's body during sleep. Different types of sleep studies are available depending on one's symptoms and the sleep disorders that may be present, according to Head of Pulmonary and Chest Department at Al-Ahli Hospital, Dr. Hassan Sawaf.

'A sleep technician monitors a patient who stays overnight at a specialized clinic. A variety of vital organs are measured throughout the night, including eye movement, brain and muscle activity, respiratory effort and airflow, blood oxygen levels, body positioning and movements, snoring, and heart rate, said Dr. Sawaf.

'Sleep studies are a vital diagnostic tool for many sleep disorders, but they aren't necessary in all cases. A doctor can prescribe a sleep study depending on a person's symptoms and overall health, he added.

He said that some patients may require staying for more than a day due to their condition.

People who experience issues or daytime symptoms such as fatigue, drowsiness, depression, or difficulty concentrating are advised to consult a pulmonary consultant or sleep medicine specialist.

'Patients with obesity with sleep issues should be screened for sleep apnea. Your doctor can help you determine whether a sleep study is right for you, said Dr. Sawaf.

A sleep study is a non-invasive, overnight exam that allows doctors to monitor while a person sleeps to see what is  happening in the brain and body.  It is usually done in a special lab. It is also known as a polysomnogram (PSG) or polysomnography.

During the test, an EEG monitors brain activity to identify sleep cycles and disturbances. A sleep specialist uses this as well as movements, breathing, oxygen levels, and heart rate to find out whether one has a sleep disorder.

The data of sleep study will usually be taken by a technologist, and later evaluated by a doctor. They then will schedule an appointment for the treatment plan.

A sleep study is done to check sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder/restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia and sleepwalking.
