Soccer Icon, Dribble Master 'Diego Maradona' Dies at 60


(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Football legend Diego Maradona, one of the greatest soccer icons died, at his Buenos Aires home.

He was a former Argentina's attacking midfielder and manager, he had a successful brain blood clot weeks ago, and to be treated for alcohol dependency.

Diego died at 60 from a heart attack on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, his death was confirmed by his lawyer.

In 1986 he was the captain when Argentine scored the world cup, his famous goal of that time 'Hand of God' is still remembered.

He scored the controversial goal, where he ran through the England team scoring a stunning solo-goal, he showcased his extraordinary dribbling talent and control that many views as unmatched. 

Maradona played for Barcelona and Napoli in his club career, he won two Series A titles with the Italian side.

As an Argentinos Junior player, he played for Sevilla, Boca Juniors, and Newell's Old Boys in Argentine.

He represented Argentine in Four World Cups, scoring 34 goals in his 91 appearances.

Maradona was meant to led Argentine in the 1994 world cup in the United States but was sent home after he tested positive for ephedrine drug.

He struggled with cocaine addiction and was banned for 15 months following his positive result for drugs testing in 1991.

On his 37th birthday in 1997, he announced his official retirement, at his second stint at Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

He was appointed head coach of the Argentinian team in 2008 but left the team in 2010 when his team was beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals, he also had managed teams in the United Arab Emirates and Mexico, at the time of his death he was in charge of the Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata a professional argentine club.

Pele who leveled himself to Diego's talent, was the first to pay his tributes on his death, saying, 'Certainly, one day we'll kick a ball together in the sky above,'.

Christiano Ronaldo Juventus and Portugal prominent forward also shared his condolences, he said 'Today I bid farewell to a friend and the world bids farewell to an eternal genius. One of the best of all time. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten."

Messi called Maradona 'Eternal', adding to his word "A very sad day for all Argentines and football,".

"He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal,' he said, 'I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends."

From the world of Cricket world, Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar said in a tweet, 'Football and the world of sports has lost one of its greatest players today. Rest in Peace Diego Maradona! You shall be missed'.

'What Diego has done for football, for making us fall in love with this beautiful game, is unique. Diego deserves our eternal gratitude for that.' FIFA president Gianni Infantino said,

The mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, announced the team's stadium to be renamed after Diego tweeting that 'Diego made our people dream, he redeemed Naples with his genius. In 2017 he became our honorary citizen, Diego, Neapolitan and Argentine, you gave us joy and happiness! Naples loves you!'

Maradona nearly died of a heart attack following a cocaine overdose in 2000, years of drug use, alcoholism, and overeating truncated his career.

He became friends while receiving medical treatment in Cuba, they became so close he had tattoos of Fidel Castro and his comrade, Che Guevara, He reportedly supported former-Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
