(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: The 10th edition of Katara Traditional Dhow Festival will be held this year, the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) has confirmed.

'Because legacy is a pillar of the future, Katara has launched the 10th edition of the Katara Traditional Dhow Festival 2020 with the participation of many friendly countries, said Katara in a social media post yesterday.

The festival is slated to be hosted from December 1 to 5 at Katara Beach.

Throughout the five-day festival, visitors will witness exciting activities and events and experience a distinctive ambience that will showcase the authentic maritime tradition inspired by Qatar's ancestors in the past, the statement said.

A vital event in Katara's calendar, the festival provides an opportunity for young people to know and appreciate Qatar's centuries-old maritime heritage which it shares with neighbouring states. Previous editions of the annual event, which is aimed towards promoting awareness of the country's rich maritime legacy, had featured exhibitions, competitions, and traditional performances among others.

Last year's edition of the festival was distinguished for being the longest yet, running for 15 days. It saw the participation of 11 countries including Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Turkey, India, Greece, Italy, Spain, Iran, and Zanzibar. It coincided with the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup football tournament and the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019.

Traditional music and dance performances from different troupes added colour to last year's festival which featured a programme packed with activities and events including exhibitions, traditional art, competitions, and cultural and recreational activities. From the rich showcase of traditional methods of fishing, shipbuilding and making ropes, sail and dredging machine to the display of ancient dhows, handicraft, traditional food and seafood to cultural performances and workshops, the previous edition of the festival offered a variety of experiences to thousands who visited it.

Maritime contests including rowing, sailing, Al Haddaq, free swimming, Al Brikha, Al Jinan, Shoush and Tafrees, in addition to Senyar competition were also held during the course of the festival the previous year.
