Qatar- Katara organises handicraft workshops at Cultural Market


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: The Cultural Village Foundation - Katara has announced a series of handicraft workshops for the public at its ongoing inaugural International Handicrafts and Traditional Productions Cultural Market.

In a social media post, Katara said the workshops which are now available at the market include porcelain, painting on glass, drawing on canvas, crochet works, fronds works, rosary making, creating bracelets made of beads, gypsum works, all kinds of hand embroidery, resin art, and drawing on various materials.

Through these workshops, the market acts as a cultural conduit which enables artisans to share an important aspect of their culture to the public as well as promotes cultural understanding among visitors.  

With a wide array of diverse handicraft from 15 countries, the first-ever cultural market which launched at the squares of Katara buildings 45, 47 and 48 is a cultural confluence where significant elements of cultures of different countries intersect through the brilliant showcase of traditional handmade products.  

Artisans from Qatar and expatriate communities representing Ethiopia, India, Iran, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Singapore, Spain, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine are displaying their handmade products at the market. A number of handicraft companies are also taking part in the market.

The market is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm to 9pm until March 4.

This four-month-long cultural market reaffirms Katara's strong support for the handicraft industry clearly demonstrated through the launch of a number of initiatives and events. Prior to the market, Katara concluded the third edition of Traditional Handicrafts Exhibition featuring a 10-day showcase of native handicrafts from Qatar, Ethiopia, Syria, Palestine, Tunisia, Morocco, Sudan, and Iran.  

The market is located just outside Building 48 which is home to the Handicrafts Gallery which contains a display of the rich variety of indigenous Qatari handicrafts which are considered a significant part of national identity. Recently, Katara launched a series of workshops on developing traditional handicraft with the participation of Qatari craftswomen aimed at reviving and maintaining the local handicraft industry.

Katara also organized a handicraft competition under the activities of Qatari Women's Pen Forum which aimed at inspiring creativity among talents and focused on heritage vocabulary.
