Marriott Hotels receives USD23m fine

(MENAFN) Marriott Hotels chain receive an 18.4 million pounds (USD23 million) penalty for breaching sensitive data of 399 million guests, by the UK's data privacy supervisory body.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) stated that names, mobile numbers, emails and passport details were all jeopardized in the cyber-attack.

The ICO declared that the hotel chain was unsuccessful in implementing suitable protection protocols, but admitted that it was an upgrade for the company.

The first stage of the cyber-attack took place back in 2014, impacting the Starwood Hotels group, which was bought by Marriott two years later.

However, it wasn't until 2018, that the problem was first noted, after the hacker had access to all affected systems, that included guests names, emails, mobile numbers, passport numbers, arrival and departure data, VIP status, and loyalty program numbers, that was what promoted the ICO to claim that the Marriott had failed to keep sensitive information safe by the standards of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
